Email routing in cpanel
Email Routing enables you to configure how the system routes incoming emails for accounts under the specified domain.
There are three ways in which the email can be routed in cPanel, which are configured based on the Mail Exchanger (MX) records.
-
Local Mail Exchanger: The lowest numbered mail exchanger points to an IP address on the hosting server.
-
Backup Mail Exchanger: The lowest numbered mail exchanger points to an IP address not on the hosting server.
-
Remote Mail Exchanger: No mail exchangers point to an IP address on the hosting server.
Steps to configure Email routing in cPanel
- Login to your cPanel using valid credentials:
- Navigate to Email Routing. This option is present under the Email section in cPanel.

- Select the correct option based on the domain’s MX records. (It is important to set the correct option here as setting an incorrect option can break mail reception for the domain on the server).
- Selecting the “Automatically Detect Configuration” will instruct cPanel to automatically choose the routing to be followed based on the domain’s MX records.
- Click on “Change” to set the selected email routing for the domain as the configuration to be followed while dealing with inbound email.
